Pre – Pointe Assessments

The aim of a Pre Pointe assessment is to establish a student’s physical readiness to commence Pointe work. A team approach with close liaison between the dance teacher, physiotherapist, parent/guardian and student provides the dancer with a network of support. The aim is to encourage optimal physical and artistic development, building confidence and a strong sense of responsibility for one’s own wellbeing. We love to play our part in the development of confident, resilient, healthy young dancers.

What does the assessment involve?

We assess a range of attributes impacting technique, alignment, as well as potential for injury.

  • Postural symmetry and control
  • Stability of the centre, low back and pelvis
  • Turn out
  • Foot and ankle function
  • Balance and co-ordination

The dancer will discover individual strengths and limitations affecting technique and injury risk.  Limitations are addressed through an exercise plan, advice, and communication. A comprehensive report detailing findings is completed for follow through with the referring dance school, and relevant teachers.

The student is often at an ideal age in their growth and development when they have the maturity to understand their individual needs and can greatly influence physical development through awareness and practice.

We strongly believe encouragement and positivity is essential to enhance motivation and promote overall wellbeing for the dancer.

    What should the Dancer wear?

A leotard and footless tights, or a crop top with shorts depending on preference. No shoes are required. Hair is to be tied up off the neck and shoulders.

What forms should be completed prior to the appointment?

A Consent form is required if under 18 years, to be completed by a parent or guardian. The ballet student will fill in a Dance Student Information form, detailing dance participation, injury history and technique feedback. Once your appointment is confirmed, these forms will be emailed to you.

What happens if I am not yet ready to go en pointe?

The areas requiring attention will be discussed in detail at your assessment. You will be given specific exercises and suggestions to help overcome challenges. The Physiotherapist will liaise with your dance teachers to enable follow through in class. You will return for a 30-minute reassessment once your Dance teacher feels you are ready.

Can I claim the fee for a Pre Pointe-Assessment?

Yes, if you have Physiotherapy coverage with a private health fund, you may claim all or part of the fee.

Does a parent or guardian need to attend the appointment?

We encourage parents/guardians to attend as it is an interesting learning process, however all relevant details will be noted in the report of which you will receive a copy. We are always available for questions should there be any issues you wish to discuss further.

    Dance Assessments

A Dance assessment provides the student with the knowledge and understanding of individual strengths, limitations, and movement patterns. Understanding one’s unique body and its requirements enables the dancer to improve technique, optimise performance, and reduce injury risk. An assessment can be very helpful if the dancer is finding certain movements or positions challenging and wanting to know the why and how to become a stronger, safer dancer.

During an assessment we will look at factors influencing your dance technique, to help us best guide you with your specific needs.

    What do we assess?

    • Posture and alignment.
    • Core and pelvic control.
    • Arm lines.
    • Hip range of movement, flexibility, and strength
    • Knee Stability
    • Foot and ankle control
    • Injury Susceptibility
    • General technique

When should I consider a Dance assessment?

    • During periods of growth and physical development
    • When you are thinking of increasing your dance hours or intensity
    • When returning to class after injury
    • If you have a persistent injury or niggle
    • If you are receiving corrections but are unsure how to make improvements
    • After a long break from dance, before returning to the studio
    • When changing dance schools
    • If you wish to gain more understanding of your movement to help you become a stronger dancer

During your assessment, you will receive exercises, tips and advice based on your unique findings. A detailed report will be done summarising findings.  This is useful for reminders on your specific areas of focus, and to be able to assess progress going forwards. Information can be shared with those involved in your teaching to enable the best outcome for you.

Our expertise in dance physiotherapy will help guide you through challenges and injuries so you can thrive on your Dance journey.
